Fibroid Tumors in Breast

There are different names with which fibroid tumors in breast are referred to. They are also known as fibrocystic breast disease, mammary dysplasia, benign breast disease, fibroid breasts, etc. So, what are these fibroid tumors exactly? They are non cancerous, movable and rubbery nodules. These tumors are painful and are often located closer to the surface of the breast. Fibroid tumors in the breast is commonly seen in women above the age of 30. According to statistics, about one-third of the women population is said to suffer from this condition. They are said to be a cumulative effect of the menstrual cycles and hormonal cycles, that the women goes through. Along with the different changes in the body, it is also the effect of collection of fluids in the cells and cellular waste in the breast region.

Normally, this condition starts around the time of puberty, only to end after menopause. After attaining menopause, fibroid tumors become less of a problem. It can be attributed to the fact, that the levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body are also on the decline after menopause.

During every menstrual cycle, the body goes through a change in the levels of hormones estrogen and progesterone. These hormones have a direct impact on the tissues in the breast. It in turn leads to multiplying of the cells. Other than the hormones estrogen and progesterone, thyroid hormone, insulin, prolactin also have a role to play in the formation of fibroid breast tumors. They are also commonly seen in pregnant women, because of the high levels of hormone estrogen, during pregnancy.

Symptoms of Fibroid Tumors in Breast
When one takes a look at the signs and symptoms of fibroid tumors, it is very clear that the woman’s menstrual cycle has a great role in the condition of fibroid tumors. The first of the symptoms of presence of fibroid tumors in breast is lumps, which are rubbery and movable. These lumps do not have any particular shape. When the fibroid tumors appear, there is a feeling of heaviness in the breast. In most cases, the tumors appear only in one breast at a time. The woman will experience breast soreness along with tenderness and/or swelling. They may be accompanied by dull or severe pain. The pain may not always be persistent. In most cases the pain is intermittent. Increased breast sensitivity is also among the symptoms of fibroid tumors. There can be a feeling of itchiness around the nipples. Normally the symptoms of fibroid tumors aggravate just before the start of menstrual period and alleviate after the period.

Treatment for Fibroid Tumors in Breast
When the fibroid tumors symptoms are seen, it is important to get the treatment for the condition. The first step of fibroid tumors treatment is to diagnose the condition. Physical examination and ultrasound (mammography to be precise) are used to diagnose the condition. Breast test exams may also be carried out, if the gynecologist is of the opinion that there is something abnormal with the tumor. If the results show abnormalities, the lump may be removed surgically. It is a common practice to conduct a biopsy on the lump to rule out breast cancer. In most cases, the fibroid tumor is monitored to see if the tumor does not increase. Mostly, the tumor goes away on its own.

Herbal or homeopathic medicines may be taken to get rid of fibroid tumors in breast. The woman may be given oral contraceptives, which will help in controlling the over reacting hormones estrogen and progesterone. In case of pain, pain killers may be prescribed.

Certain changes may be required in the diet. It may be necessary to switch over to low fat diet, to reduce the incidences of fibroid tumors in breast. Foods like apples, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. should be includes in the diet, as they help in excretion of estrogen levels. It is better to stay clear of caffeine, carbonated sodas, concentrated starches, etc. It is best to have light vegetarian diet during menstrual cycle. At the same time, it is best to consume diuretic foods to get rid of the toxins from the body.

If you have been diagnosed with fibroid tumors in breast, it is important to keep a track of the tumor. In rare cases, the tumor may be cancerous. At the same time, regular self examination of the breast for tumors should be carried out so that the condition can be treated well in time.
